Australia says Bali airport still lacks security

The Australian government warned its citizens Wednesday that security at the Indonesian resort island of Bali’s international airport does not meet international standards.

In an updated travel advisory, it said that the US Transportation Security Administration had declared that Bali’s Denpasar Airport does not comply with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.

It said Qantas and Australian Airlines services continued to operate as normal to Bali with “additional security measures in place to meet ICAO security standards.”

A press release posted on the TSA website said that the US Department of Homeland Security had directed US air carriers issuing tickets for travel between the United States and Indonesia to notify buyers accordingly.

It said TSA representatives were assisting local authorities “with correcting security deficiencies at the airport as quickly as possible.”

Carriers flying between the United States and Indonesia were temporarily providing their own additional security, it said.

The Indonesian government was notified of its failure to comply with ICAO standards 90 days ago, it added.

Indonesia’s most popular international tourist destination has been rocked by Islamic extremist bombings twice—a 2002 attack killed 202 people, while a triple suicide bombing in October killed 20 bystanders.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of Indonesia said Tuesday that he, too, was under escalated threat, as the number of police guarding him and his family was doubled.

A Perennial Sight on Bali's Streets, the Sellers of Home-Made Trumpets are Back in Force.

Imported from a huge supporting cottage-industry in Java, thousand of colorful foil-wrapped trumpet noisemakers are now being sold on the edge of every main thoroughfare in Bali in anticipation of that one night each year when fully grown adults don ridiculous looking hats and run about the room making noises that, in other circumstances, would earn their own offspring a solid back-hander.

But, heck, let decorum slide for just this one night. After all, you've got an entire year to live down your behavior on New Year's Eve.

In an enterprise where size does count, a small 30 centimeter trumpet will set you back around Rp. 1,500 (approximately US$ 0.15) with the more obtrusive 1 meter long Table–blaster model going for Rp. 4,000 (approximately US$0.40). Generally made from recycled cardboard and art paper and decorated in bright colored foils, the run-of-the-mill trumpet is a straight instrument resembling either a clarinet or an oboe.

However, specialist trumpet masters make more elaborate models resembling French horns, trombones or Sousaphones – each of which sell for top Rupiah. Local trumpet salesmen are always eager to offer discounts to bulk purchasers in seek of accouterments for late-night revelers at local hotels or house-parties.

When's best to buy your trumpet is a topic of much popular local debate. Obviously a well-advanced science, trumpet market analysts will disagree whether its best to buy early when selection is best or hold off until New Year's eve when looming rain clouds will see street side vendors engage in panic selling.

New visa policy effective on 1st February 2004

The Ngurah Rai International Airport and Benoa Harbor in Bali will start to charge visitors with Visa on Arrival (VoA) when the new visa regulation is put into effect on February 1st, 2004. The Ngurah Rai International Airport and Benoa Harbor are the gateways to the Island of Gods.
Sources said that the new visa policy will be effective on February 1st, 2004.Indonesia will charge foreigners US$25 for a 30-day nonrenewable visa or US$10 for a 3 day visit upon arrival.

It would take several minutes for immigration officers to process a visa-on-arrival request because the visa-on-arrival services and facilities are provided at immigration clearance desks at either airports or harbours.

Citizens of 21 countries will be offerred the facility VISA ON ARRIVAL, they are : South Africa, Argentina, Denmark, The United Arab Emirates, Italy, Canada, Poland, South Korea, New Zealand, France, United States, Britain, Australia, Japan, France, Hungary, Norway, Swiss, Taiwan, Brazil and Finland. The procedure on the airport should not not take more then 7 minutes.

Justice and Human Rights Minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra said that the government would regulate the implementation of VoA in several gateways to Indonesia, including the Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Jakarta, Polonia Airport in Medan, North Sumatera, Sam ratulangi Airport in Manado, North Sulawesi, Tabing Airport in Padang, Batam Harbor, Sibolga Harbor, Belawan in North Sumatera, Tanjung Priuk Harbor in Jakarta, Tanjung Perak in East Java and Jayapura Harbor in Papua.

The decree grants a visa-free facility to visitors from Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, the Philippines, Hongkong Special Administrative Region, Macao Special Administrative Region, Chile, Morocco, Peru and Vietnam.

Vietnam decided to offer visa-free facility to Indonesia on December 4 of last year and therefore, the country is also granted with visa-free facility.

Vietnam replaces Turkey since the neighboring country has decided to offer a visa-free facility to Indonesians starting December 4 of this year.

The new policy cuts the length of the free-visa-on-arrival stay from 60 days to 30 days. Visitors from countries with visa-on-arrival facility would only be allowed to stay for 30 days and they will have to go to a new counter to have their passports stamped with the on-arrival visa before going to the immigration clearance desk.

A tracking trail has been recently established between Goa Gajah and Yeh Pulu, two popular tourist destinations located in Gianyar regency, about 50 minutes drive to teh north east of Denpasar. Goa Gajah is located to the north of Denpasar passing trough Sakah-Peliatan Village.

While Yeh Pulu can be accessed by car within less then 10 minutes drive from Goa Gajah on the Bedaulu junction.The trail for trekking is located between these temples. Tracking can be carried out by taking a walk on a trail from Goa Gajah to teh south and then turn left next to Dedari temple toward Yeh Pulu, vice versa, which can be accomplished within 1-2 hours. On the trip, tourists beside being able to enjoy the ancient 'elephant cave' of Goa Gajah which was made between the 10-11th centuries, they can also see some unique temples, like Dedari (the Angel) and Pengastulan temples. In addition ricefarms and traditional farming activities can also be seen close to end of trial bedore seeing the ancient Yeh Pulu at the end of trial. Bali is a large Island, with over 5,600 sqm of land space; it needs to be as its population is around 2.9 million people. Its central lands are dominated by a series of volcanic peaks (some still active) with Mt. Agung, the highest and holiest, at 3142m. Most of the tourist areas are in the south of the Island, with Kuta being the busiest of the lot. Our villas however are located in the more sophisticated areas, just outside the most popular beaches. For example in Seminyak; (the west coast beach area renowned for trendy restaurants), in Sanur (east coast with its safe family beach) or on the southern peninsula of Nusa Dua (full of resort facilities, including golf). We also have some charming villas in the lovely Ubud area, which is on higher ground in the cooler central area of Bali. You can even find an Amazing Luxury Villa on Bali’s quiet northern shore in Permuteran…a real get away.

When it comes to the local culture there is so much to see and do that we cannot possibly list it all here. Our local staff has selected the best quality tours and guides, who can take you to some of the lesser known old villages and off the beaten track temples, including visits to a king or two! Dining out in Bali is as varied as everything else on the Island. From local village stalls (warungs) to international class restaurants, prices are good and so are standards. There is a growing community of expatriates on the Island prompting the growth of quality eateries and delis, many of them offering a villa delivery service.

For the sporty, Bali has much to offer. There are 3 excellent golf courses, exciting white water rafting rivers, superb diving options, water sports of all kinds and good value days out to neighboring Islands. Some of our villas also have tennis courts. For longer holidays we recommend combining 2 to 3 different villas and locations (for example starting in Seminyak or Kerobokan for 3 days, moving up to Ubud for 3 days, then on to Pemuteran for a few more nights (great diving up here!) before returning down south again to the Sanur area to complete the holiday; the airport is just a 30 minute hop from Sanur.
